Natural fibre can play a critical role in slowing climate change, rebuilding biodiversity, reducing plastic pollution and meeting customers high quality, luxury fibre needs. We must help move consumers away from petrochemical clothes to natural fibres.
Lake Háwea Station Farm 10,000 Merino sheep. Our sheep produce finer wools from 16 to 18 micron.
Our fundamentals for our farming practises are around being :
- Climate Positive.
- B-Corp certified.
- Regeneratively grown.
- Meeting, exceeding and leading the highest animal welfare standards.
- Supporting our Biodiversity.
Climate Positive. At Lake Háwea Station we sequester almost twice as much carbon as we emit. Our regenerating forest and new plantings are removing Carbon at a rate almost double of that , that our livestock emit, across our 6,500 hectares. We have planted over 25,000 native trees which is assisting this carbon sequestration. Our independent emissions and sequestration reports can be made available at request. Lake Háwea Station was the first farm in Australasia to be certified carbon zero.

B-Corp Certified. Lake Háwea Station was the first sheep farm in the world to be B-Corp certified. Just as many fashion brands see the benefits of a holistic certification process so do we. And are proud to meet the standards the B Corp certification sets across environment, community, waste, water, people and more.

Regenerative Farming. We are deep believers in a regenerative approach, for us on the farm this involves many different practices such as; no tilage, no insecticides or pesticides, multi species diverse pastures and holistic grazing. This approach we believe is not only more beneficial for soil health it is also better for our animal health. Diversity of diet and the ability for our animals to self select is a key function of regenerative farming. We also run our own compost creation system and are working with seaweed companies to build soil health via kelp fertilisers and improve stock welfare with seaweed health products. We have baselined soil carbon to measure the build up of soil carbon.

Animal Welfare. We love our animals. These sentient beings are the reason we get to live and work where we do. We have introduced a new shearing model where our shearers are incentivised on the treatment of the sheep. The highest animal health standards are prescribed too, and we look to ensure low stress movements around the station. We are currently undergoing SPCA certification and may be the first sheep farm in New Zealand to achieve this.

Biodiversity. As you will see in our specific section on biodiversity, we have critically endangered species on the Station. We exclude our farm animals from any of these sensitive areas and reduce numbers of invasive predators. We have also planted 25,000 tres and our regenerative farming practises help promote better biodiversity on the Station. We also have an extensive and growing network of bee hives.
